About Teeth Whitening

Dental bleaching, also known as tooth whitening, is a common procedure in the field of cosmetic dentistry

What is the difference between all the different types of whitening systems available?

There are many methods to whiten teeth:

  • bleaching strips
  • bleaching pen
  • bleaching gel
  • laser bleaching
  • Bleaching done by beauticians
  • Bleaching done in shopping centres.

BLEACHING STRIPS and PENS are available over the counter and generally used without dentist supervision. As a result, they generally use lower strength/concentration materials and will have less efficacy. They also do not offer protection against the bleach touching the gums, and do not have as effective adaptation to the teeth so may not have as concentrated an effect.

BLEACHING DONE AT BEAUTICIANS AND AT SHOPPING CENTRE PODS.
These providers claim to provide the same service as what you would get at a dental office, but these are the differences.

  1. Custom fitted trays or guards.— that seal around each individual tooth and prevent material from escaping on to the gum. As a result, there may be some gum sensitivity from chemicals touching the gum, or they have to use a much lesser concentration which is less efficacious.
  2. They generally provide short treatments (20 minutes), and you have to return for multiple visits, at additional costs. (dentist’s provide the entire whitening course which can take from 1-2 hours which gives instant, more profound and lasting results)
  3. Top up and maintenance kits with custom fitted trays--- are generally not provided at these places, where at our dental office you will get your home maintenance kit so you can keep your white teeth white whenever you should feel the need! Our clients generally do top ups for a night or two every year.
  4. The training, knowledge and science behind the treatment. How to care for the health of the teeth and gums involved, to screen teeth and gums are in a state that is suitable for the treatments. Eg teeth with gum recession or cavities, root surfaces, tartar buildup all will affect the result or the procedures required.

DENTIST PRESCRIBED HOME WHITENING is done with bleaching gel which is applied to the teeth using thin guard trays which are custom fitted by your dentist. How well this works depends on a few factors.

  1. The concentration of the gel used, there are different strengths and effectiveness available.
  2. The fit of the trays:
    • Do they seal around the cuff of gum so that no material can escape and affect the gums?
    • Do they have a reservoir built in to each tooth to contain more material for effectiveness?
    • If these are done ideally, higher strength peroxides may be used safely and thus more effective whitening.

LASER BLEACHING

This is an in surgery procedure that allows instant whitening. It uses light energy to accelerate the process of bleaching in a dental office. Used in combination with take home gels, the effect is dramatic colour change and long lasting.
